what is the best way to research the audience in order to find out how they will best experience the information while designing?

I have found that just being around them can be the best way to find out what they experience and what they are looking for in a design. But if you are not able to be around your audience another idea is to use websites like http://www.lib.umich.edu/govdocs/stdemog.html or http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/index.html They will give you an idea of the type of person you are designing towards. Another great way is to do test runs. Make a mock up and put it up for a test and see what the reaction is. Which ever way you research, your design will always be judge and misunderstood.
research. research. research. once i've figured out my audience, i google them, enter their name in shutterstock, veer and dictionaries. find images, or links to their stats. yada yada. i don't know if there is the perfect way, or the correct way - butttttt you find your own i assume.

the absolute best way is to go out into the community / find your audience and watch and watch and watch. take notes and take pictures when you can.
that is not always an option but it is the best way.
